Eric beta read the first four chapters of my fantasy novel (about 6,300 words). He provided me substantial inline commentary, which was a mix of complimentary, helpful, and honestly, off-puttingly prescriptive feedback. Let me be quick to point out that I messaged him and he responded thoughtfully with generous messages further explaining his point of view, which I appreciate. His initial inline comments contained a handful of “MUST”s and “need to”s about his thinking that my chapters required a lot more detail and description in order for the reader to become immersed in my world. I’ll note that other beta readers I’ve had didn’t voice this opinion (not that I expect all readers to agree), and as a writer I generally don’t agree with the philosophy of introducing chunks of description and worldbuilding before it’s necessary to the story. (As a reader, I’ll give it a chance, to a point.) I’m sure there are other writers who will find Eric simpatico, so he could be a good match for them. Eric did not provide me a separate report with his overall take on things like plot, characters, worldbuilding, etc. He did state later in his messages, “I didn't mention much on character and plot, simply because 6,000 words isn't really all that much to go off of.” Since I did get an earful about my worldbuilding in his inline comments, I guess that counts for something. I did appreciate Eric’s many compliments, and the suggestions he made that I agree will help me improve my story.

Eric delivered a great well-thought-out reader report on delivery day deadline, maybe off by just a few minutes. I love his reader report. It is obvious he spends a lot of effort on my manuscript. I thank Eric for his kindness, his encouragement, and his many encouraging compliments.
